Traditional crafts are a big part of my cultural background, coming from Slovakia.
While studying in Netherlands, I found myself trying to reconnect with my home through crafted products and started researching more about Slovak traditional crafts.
In my recent trip home I finally got face to face with one of the last craftsmen, that creates "Krpce" shoes.
This shoe is a product of necessity. Made by the Shepards, a veg-tan lather shoe crated out of one piece of pattern, using weaving to hold the shape together.
During the process of making this shoe I realized this is a barefoot shoe. Shepards needed to bend their feet while roaming the wide meadows and forests which was not possible in boots.
By its simplicity and compactness it became the most worn shoe for village people.
I linked this idea of Krpce- made by ordinary people not shoemakers or companies, to how I see the future of footwear. Created by individuals not shoe makers and big companies.
Shoes created with consideration of individuals needs and customized to his feet. This is becoming possible more and more with the technology of 3d printing and 3d scanning. I used this ideas to design my own version of Krpce shoes and bringing these forgotten values back to the footwear design.
